Kirsty's Paws Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing training for your Puppy or Dog can bring up plenty of questions. Here are some answers to help you get started. If you’re unsure which option would suit you, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

Can you help before my Puppy comes home?

Yes. Preparing in advance gives you time to plan your Puppy’s sleeping space, toilet routine, safe areas and first days at home.

Please get in touch to discuss support with preparing for your new arrival.

Should I choose classes or 1:1 training?

Classes can be a lovely way to learn everyday skills in a small, supportive group.

1:1 training gives you individual support focused on your priorities. It can be particularly useful for challenges at home, behaviour concerns or Dogs who find a class environment overwhelming.

You’re welcome to contact me if you’d like help deciding.

How do I know which course to choose?

I'm always happy to help you, please do contact me, send me your Dog’s age, any previous training experience and what you would most like help with.

I’ll help you choose a suitable starting point, whether that is Puppy classes, Fantastic Foundations, Terrific Teen classes, advanced training or personalised 1:1 support.

Where do you hold Dog training classes?

I hold small group classes at The Centre Ferndown, Barns Road, Ferndown, BH22 8XH, and at the YMCA in Winton, Bournemouth.

I also provide personalised 1:1 training across Ferndown, Bournemouth, Wimborne, Corfe Mullen and Sturminster Marshall. Please contact me if you’re unsure whether I cover your area.

What age can my Puppy start classes?

Puppy classes are suitable for Puppies under 16 weeks old at the start of the course.

Fantastic Foundations offers a later class start time and welcomes all Puppies under six months old at the start of the course, including those under 16 weeks. You can choose whichever class time suits you best, provided your Puppy meets the age requirement.

Does my Puppy need to have finished their vaccinations?

Most vets are happy for Puppies to attend before their final vaccination, as no unvaccinated Dogs attend the hall. Please check with your own vet before bringing your Puppy, and let me know their vaccination status before starting.

I recommend carrying your Puppy into the hall if they're not fully vaccinated, as you never know who has walked past outside.

How many Dogs are in each class?

My classes have a maximum of four Dogs. Small groups give you space to practise, time to ask questions and individual guidance throughout the course.

How long is the course and how much does it cost?

My six-week group courses cost £150. Please check the relevant booking page for current dates, times and availability.

How do I book my six-week course?

Choose your preferred class, then select the course start date on the booking calendar. This books your place for the full six-week course, so you don’t need to select each weekly session individually.

If you’re unsure which course is suitable please contact me.

What training methods do you use?

I use kind, reward-based, force-free training. This means helping your Dog learn through clear guidance, suitable rewards and achievable steps.

I’ll also help you understand your Dog’s behaviour and body language, so you can support their confidence and build a trusting relationship.

What will we learn in classes?

Classes focus on useful everyday skills, helping you understand your Dog and preventing behaviour problems. This includes coming when called, walking on a loose lead, focusing on you around distractions and being able to leave, drop items and settle.

There is also guidance on common Puppy challenges, including biting, chewing and jumping up. Exercises are adapted to help each Puppy progress at a suitable pace. For a full list of topics please check out the Classes Page

What is the difference between Puppy, Fantastic Foundations, Terrific Teen and Advanced Classes?

Puppy classes introduce essential foundations and support you through the early stages of life together. They are suitable for Puppies under 16 weeks old at the start of the course.

Fantastic Foundations offers a later class start time for Puppies under six months old, helping you develop everyday skills, confidence and a strong relationship. Younger Puppies, including those under 16 weeks, are welcome too.

Terrific Teen classes build on those foundations, helping you develop your Dog’s skills through adolescence and beyond.

Advanced classes offer further challenges and the opportunity to work towards the IMDT Partnership Grades.

If you’re unsure which class to choose, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

What are the IMDT Partnership Grades?

The IMDT Partnership Grades provide structured training goals for you and your Dog to work towards together.

They offer opportunities to develop practical skills, celebrate progress and continue learning and socialising beyond your first course.

Does my Dog need to know anything before joining?

Your Puppy does not need any previous training to join Puppy or Fantastic Foundations classes.

For Terrific Teen or advanced classes, please tell me about any training you have already done. You don’t need to have attended my Puppy classes first, but I’ll help you find the right group for your Dog’s age and experience.

Can my Dog attend if they bark at other Dogs or people?

Group classes are suitable for Dogs who are comfortable around other Dogs and people, without signs of reactivity, aggression or anxiety.

If your Dog barks at other Dogs or finds being around them challenging, please contact me before booking. I can discuss your Dog’s needs with you and help you choose suitable support.

Will my Puppy play with the other Puppies in class?

The focus is on helping your Puppy feel comfortable around other Dogs, engage with you and learn useful skills.

Socialisation includes learning that other Dogs can be nearby without needing to greet or play with everyone. Any interaction needs to suit the Puppies involved and help them feel safe.

What should I bring to class?

Bring plenty of small, tasty treats, poo bags, water and a bowl, plus a comfortable mat or blanket for your Dog to rest on.

Your Dog will also need a well-fitting harness or flat collar and a suitable lead. Your joining information will explain anything else you need for your course.

Please do not bring products containing peanuts to classes at the YMCA in Winton.

Can my family come along?

A maximum of two adults, both over 18, can attend with each Dog. Classes are not suitable for children to attend.

This helps create a relaxed learning environment and sets both Puppies and children up for success. You can learn the exercises in class, then help your children repeat them successfully at home.

You’ll also receive handouts and video links for everything covered, so you can practise together as a family.

What happens if I miss a class?

Due to hall hire costs and limited class availability, I’m unable to refund or exchange missed classes.

You’ll still have handouts and video links for everything covered, so you can practise at home. I’m always available if you have questions or need additional support.

What support will I get between classes and 1-2-1s?

You’ll receive handouts and video links for everything we cover together, helping you practise at home and involve the rest of your household.

You’ll also have access to the relevant class companion for practice ideas as you progress through your course.

If you have questions or need extra guidance, I’m always available to help too.

How much practice should I do at home?

Little and often works well. A few minutes of practice when your Dog is comfortable and ready to learn can fit naturally into your day.

Allow time for sniffing, play and rest too. I’ll help you adapt exercises so practice feels achievable for both of you.

Where can I read your booking terms?

Please read my terms and conditions before booking. These explain class suitability, cancellations and other important information.

If you have any questions, please contact me before reserving your place.
